Sweet 16...Times Two...
After having a relatively up and down season...one which saw a six game winning streak to start the season get immediately followed by a four game losing streak...and then just some pretty solid basketball en route to a 20-10 record, the Michigan State Spartans women's basketball team did something pretty special tonight.
As a #9 seed in the tournament, the Spartans welcomed the Duke University Blue Devils to the Breslin Center for the second round. The Spartans lucked out to be basically a "home" team when the Breslin Center was chosen to host some games for the tournament. So the lower seeded Spartans had a pretty rowdy crowd in hand as they faced the #1 seeded Devils.
Add to this the fact that Spartan fans HATE the Duke coach, JP McCallie...seeing as she deserted the Spartans to go coach at Duke two years ago...and you have the recipe for something interesting.
And interesting it was...the Spartans held Duke to only 27% shooting from the floor. They held the Devils to a season low point total. They finished the game on a 17-3 run. They didn't let Duke score from the field for nearly the last 8 minutes of the game.
What all of this led to was a sound whipping of the Blue Devils...Spartans 63...Devils 49.
So both Michigan State Spartan basketball teams will be playing in the second weekend of the tournament. Pretty cool.

Revenge is so hard to do well...
Glad to hear Duke was put in their place.
